"Engleman" is a truly outstanding example of Stradivari's work. This instrument is in an exceptionally pure state of preservation. The varnish is of very deep rich orange brown colour still remaining plentiful all over the instrument. This violin owes its exceptionally fresh condition to the fact that it has been in the hands of same Commander Young's family for almost one hundred and fifty years. It was then sold by W.E. Hill and Sons in 1951 to a French amateur, Dr. Pierre Lacombe. The instrument was then passed on to Dr. E.P. Engleman, a notable American collector whoes name this instrument bears. In May 1995, Nippon Music Foundation purchased the violin with the support of The Nippon Foundation.
